It depends what the goal of the affiliate program is.  I have not seen any substantial lift in revenue from allowing browser extensions that activate on a merchant's website when testing, so we educate our clients and test more when they want to.  None of our current clients work with them because there was no lift in revenue or conversions.  If the goal of the program is to simply show sales and not if they add value, bring in revenue, or are profitable you don't have to worry.  \n\nUsers love the coupons and cashback (myself included as I am an active user of one), but the test is if they still shop when you remove the incentives.  From what we've seen with our tests they do still shop and the company is now more profitable when they're removed because they're not paying out commissions and reducing margins further with network fees.","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Adam Riemer","url":"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me"}},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/affiliate-marketing\/a-potential-seo-gain-from-affiliate-browsers\/#Comment2","dateCreated":"2024-12-21 18:39:34","description":"Great article, Adam! It's great to meet you too!\n\nThe results I shared have nothing to do with a recent update by Google, but I do understand why many people feel this way with some of the recent updates.  I could use examples from a couple years ago and it is the same thing.\n\nFor Navboost, yes that is exactly what I am saying.  If there is a ranking lower on the page and it keeps getting clicks because the click is incentivized and Google isn't aware of the incentivization, this is what would trigger it to go higher and secure the higher position.\n\nThe other place we disagree is embedding it into the algorithm.  These are two completely separate things.  The browser extensions exist on browsers and are likely not being tracked by the algorithm making them an untracked or unknown outlier.  Because of the amount of them, they create a signal as they get used generating something Google is likely unaware of.  If Navboost is a thing and impacts search results on larger queries, this absolutely could be a way to influence it.  If navboost has a large impact on SERPs then this would not be something small.  If navboost is minor, this is a small thing.  But it is a theory only.  No way for any of us to know for sure.","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Adam Riemer","url":"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me"}},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/affiliate-marketing\/a-potential-seo-gain-from-affiliate-browsers\/#Comment6","dateCreated":"2024-12-02 15:17:48","description":"Hey Adam,\r\n\r\nBrand strategist here with a heavy SEO background. I love this theory and think it's worth tracking.\r\n\r\nHowever, I just wanted to let you know that the examples you shared are all direct results of Google's latest Core and Algorithm updates. These types of changes are happening regardless of whether a site has an affiliate extension instance or not. For example, Google prioritized varied domains in branded keyword terms, placing eBay and other resellers on page 1 and demoting the 2nd, 3rd, 4th branded results that would usually show up there.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, Navboost has been mainly used to tell Google whether the user finds the page listed in the SERP results useful after clicking through from the search results. That way, Google can know whether the page is actually helpful to users or if the search result should show something else.\r\n\r\nEstablishing this type of tracking on browser extensions would be hard because the code for it would need to be embedded from the algorithm into the extension, something Google didn't want to do when it had to keep this a secret. So, I'm not saying it isn't happening; I'm just saying it is difficult to happen, and even if it did, the impact would be small.\r\n\r\nHope that helps!","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Amanda","url":""}}]},{"@type":"BlogPosting","@id":"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/affiliate-marketing\/why-you-should-not-allow-affiliates-to-place-pixels-and-partner-with-networks\/","headline":"Why You Should Not Allow Affiliates to Place Pixels and Partner with Networks","url":"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/affiliate-marketing\/why-you-should-not-allow-affiliates-to-place-pixels-and-partner-with-networks\/","datePublished":"2010-09-21","dateModified":"2010-09-21","mainEntityOfPage":"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/affiliate-marketing\/why-you-should-not-allow-affiliates-to-place-pixels-and-partner-with-networks\/","author":{"@type":"Person","@id":"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/author\/adamriemer\/#Person","name":"Adam Riemer","url":"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/author\/adamriemer\/","identifier":2,"description":"<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\" title=\"adam riemer\">Adam Riemer<\/a> is a two-time Affiliate Summit Pinnacle Award winner and marketing veteran who has appeared in the NYTimes.com, Forbes, SearchEngineJournal, MarketingLand, Feedfront and more for his knowledge and experience in affiliate marketing, SEO, PPC, monetization strategy and conversion rate optimization. Unfortunately certain networks promote and endorse this type of behavior as good under the name contextual publishers and advertisers and many Merchants believe them and fall for this type of behavior.  \n\nThe reality is that until Merchants actually educate themselves and realize who their partners are and stop falling for terms like Pay Per View and Opt In meaning good things and the FTC not realizing the larger issues and tax problems that can shut down an industry this will just continue to happen.  \n\nOn a good note though some Merchants are now becoming a lot more proactive and starting to educate themselves.  This is why when I first talk to a new Client or someone just looking for advice I always recommend they contact Kellie Stevens from Affiliate Fair Play as well.  She taught me everything I know and is my main source for finding out new things and new adware applications being used to rip off Merchants and other Affiliates.  \n\nI definitely appreciate all of your referrals and am happy you continue to come back here to read my blog.  I am a big fan of yours as well.","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Adam","url":""}},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/affiliate-marketing\/adware-and-media-buys-does-opt-in-mean-its-ok\/#Comment2","dateCreated":"2010-05-23 18:10:26","description":"I completely agree with you Adam that anything whose purpose is to intentionally steal commissions earned by another affiliate or unearned commissions from merchants is unethical and wise affiliate networks should ban them and affiliate managers should remove any affiliate caught using them from their program. \n\nThis is one of the primary reasons I recommended you - because you are able to determine which affiliates are up to no good and keep them out of the merchant's program and keep them from stealing commissions from sales that belong to another affiliate.","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Gail from GrowMap","url":"http:\/\/www.growmap.com\/ethical-affiliate-marketing\/"}}]}]}
