Tradeshows I’m Speaking at, Going to & Might go to (If they have me speak)

My travel schedule is finally done for the most part for the rest of the year and I cannot be happier.  I hate flying and traveling now so having this done is a huge relief for me.  Although this list won’t include smaller workshops I’m doing, webinars that are off site, etc…  It is where we can meet in person, do site audits, reviews, grab a drink if you’re a current partner or meet as a potential client if you want to talk about working together.  Anyways, here is my show list and I hope to be able to add to it if SMX approves my session and pitch.

Pubcon New Orleans:

I am very excited to be invited back to speak at Pubcon New Orleans and have Pubcon Coupons for 20% off your ticket price.  You don’t have to click my link to use these Pubcon coupon codes, just enter the coupons as you are checking out and it will save you 20% off your ticket price to Pubcon New Orleans.  Here is my personal speakers Pubcon Coupon Code – “rc-1257520”

Pubcon is one of my favorite shows for SEO and Social Media.  I always learn a few cool tricks and sometimes go to beginners sessions for a refresher.  They also tie in a few fun sessions like PR and have an entire track dedicated to Live Site Reviews which I love doing.  The Affiliate Track can be tricky.

You get a couple of white hat speakers like Myself, Robert Glazer or David Naffzinger and then you have a ton of grey and black hat that you need to be cautious of.  Even if they are pitching why you should allow certain behaviors and they make a good case for it, or why you should work with specific types of partners, remember why you don’t in the first place and evaluate the two.  Just because myself or someone else recommends something, you have to determine how it can benefit or hurt your company.  It can be very tricky.  By listening to the grey and black hat Affiliate Tactics which will be presented as white hat, you can also learn what to look for and how to find it in your programs so you can remove it and not allow your company to be stolen from.

My Pubcon Sessions:

Moderator – Interactive Site Review on Organic.

This is an awesome session where you have some great people doing live reviews of your website and help to find out what is potentially harming your organic SEO.  You’ll also get advice on how to fix it.  The panel is made up of some awesome people and I am very excited to be a part of this session.  Even if you don’t want your site reviewed, you can still come and you will more than likely learn a lot from many of the people on the panel.  This should be an awesome session.

Affiliate Research, Surveys and Case Studies.

This is a session of veterans that I really enjoy speaking with.  We all have different opinions and strategies and you will definitely get a lot out of it.  Each of us are presenting on a specific topic and then there will be time for a question and answer afterwards.  If you want to learn to monetize your site, help your program or even how to find programs to join, this is one you will not want to miss.

Moderator – Interactive Site Review with a focus on Social Media

I’m very excited about this panel as well.  You can submit your site, FanPages and social media strategies and have a panel of experts go over everything from what you are doing to your landing pages and even help drive more traffic, sales and make the most out of your current campaigns.  If you don’t want your social media programs reviewed, you can still learn a lot by watching as others submit their sites and have live reviews done of their social media strategies.

AM Days London

I’ll be at Affiliate Marketing Days in London speaking on Affiliate Theft and Fraud.  This is a solo presentation that I am very excited to talk about and teach who is adding value, who is not and how you can help to resolve these issues by implementing a few simple strategies.  This is one of my more informative topics and I hope many of you can make it.   I’m also happy to do a live example if someone would like to hand me their business card at the session and we can find out what is going on and make recommendations to help resolve issues and grow their program.

I’m also moderating a panel of Affiliates at the show called “What Affiliates Want”.  The session will have time for discussions and a questions and answers session as well as mini presentations.  The panel is made of myself, Jim Banks and Graham Jenner.  It should be a pretty decent talk because all three of us are from different backgrounds, run different types of sites and will be talking about what we want and need.  The thing that gets tricky is that what one person may want, could be the thing that causes the other partner to not want to work with you.  This should be a very interesting panel where you can learn a lot and help figure out how to grow or clean your program.

I have workshops in Paris and Amsterdam while I am over there, but they are not opened to the public.  I am however happy to meet up with you if you’d like after the workshops for a drink, dinner or sightseeing.

Blog Her:

Although I would love to speak at BlogHer, they tend to shy away from men from what I have been told by others.  I don’t know if it’s true or not, but the sessions can be ok.  The main reason I am going is for the networking with other bloggers.  There are thousands of content sites looking for everything from growing their blogs, to building relationships and also learning to monetize their sites, and the awesome gift bags and giveaways from the merchants and vendors.  You do need to be cautious as there were adware companies with toolbars in the exhibit hall last year and by promoting them, you may end up hurting your own revenue if they have adware and that adware can overwrite your cookies and take credit for your sales.  Last year was my first BlogHer and it ended up being one of the best shows I had been to to find new content sites to work with, new Affiliates and also places to guest blog.

Affiliate Summit East:

This is one of my favorite shows.  You can learn everything from black hat Affiliate Marketing to White Hat, growing a program, growing your sites as an Affiliate, SEO, PPC and pretty much anything else.  One session, besides mine if it gets selected is the live SEO panel.  You’ll find a ton of experts doing live SEO site reviews and you will learn a ton of information.  I highly recommend it.  Affiliate Summit sessions are all selected based on votes from people attending, the board and Shawn and Missy.  Here is how to vote for Affiliate Summit East Sessions.  You’ll also find my Affiliate link on the page for passes to Affiliate Summit East and I hope you can make it.  This is an awesome show that you must attend if you can make it.

Pubcon Las Vegas:

This is a much larger version of Pubcon.  If you want Search Engine, Social Media, PPC and Affiliate overload, this is the one for you.  I just sent in my speakers proposal so hopefully they’ll have me back again.

SMX Advanced:

This is a show I have always wanted to go to but would prefer to speak at so I can save some money on travel.  I just submitted my speaking proposal based on the post I wrote for @Sugarrae on Affiliate Adware and Search as well as the post for Search Engine Journal.  I’m hoping they like my session idea and also invite me to come speak.  The show is supposed to be amazing and at the Advanced show you are going to go into Search Engine overload with tons of advanced strategies.

Those are the shows I’m planning on going to.  Depending on when Share a Sale Think Tank is this year I might try to go there as well.  It will depend on costs, speaking and who else is attending.  If you are going to any of these shows and want to meet up, either leave a comment below or just use the contact form on this site.  Thank you all again for reading and hope to see you at these shows.

#BlogHer12 reviewed and prepping For #ASE12 – Good read

sparklecorn unicorn cake
sparklecorn unicorn cake

I just got back last week from BlogHer12 in NYC.  The show was absolutely insane and one that you have to attend.  Not only were the corporate sponsors completely interactive, but the parties, events and networking were nothing like I had seen before. Take 4,000+ women bloggers, me and another guy blogger and keep their kids and husbands away, and these ladies let loose and party.  Here is my recap of BlogHer NYC and then some links from people who asked on SEO and Marketing and then I’ll go into how to prepare for Affiliate Summit which starts this weekend.

BlogHer NYC started on Thursday.  Unfortunately I did not get there until Friday morning.  When I arrived people stared at me weird, however when I put on my BlogHer badge people wouldn’t stop walking up and talking.  I did have an issue with registration since I had a party pass but they didn’t have any drink tickets in them.  It didn’t make sense.  Within the first 30 minutes I already had cards from Bloggers who have followings of 10K, 50K and even one who has 100K all looking for me to write guest posts, learn about my Affiliate programs which don’t work with adware, trademark bidders and coupon sites that poach the shopping cart so they can earn more money.

The rest of the show pretty much continued with me meeting hundreds of amazing women Bloggers who know how to build an audience but not how to rank or monetize their sites.  This show has some of the most powerful resources that have yet to really dive into competition and join the Affiliate and Ad serving world.  Going there showed me that channels like Affiliate Marketing have a long way before they get near peaking.  Next were the 4 expo halls.

The exhibitors were like nothing I had seen before.  Everyone of them had amazing giveaways and most were actually fairly high end.  I got metal water bottles which cost $20 to $40 in retail stores, tons of food samples and at a couple they were handing out adult toys.  You could win 6 months of eggs from EggLands Best, tons of free food from Dannon, I got really cool muppet bandainds and lotions from Johnson and Johnson, Jimmy Dean fed me breakfast every morning and then we were even served bethany Frankle’s Skinny Girl cocktails at another booth.  I went home with water bottles, spatulas, offered iPads for reviews, etc…  It was insane!  Hershey’s combined with WalMart to create a campground where we roasted smores in an upstairs suite and next to that Hotwheels had a room for us all to play in.  Out My Window let you take pictures kissing Zac Ephron and even Starbucks was demoing products that weren’t being released for a long time yet.  Disney brought us to a movie where we watched the Secret Life of Timothy Green where all of us ended up crying at the end and they even showed us previews, shorts and trailers for movies that haven’t been announced like Monster Inc.’s prequel; Monster University, Paperman, Finding Nemo 3D, a new preview for a new Frankenstein movie directed by Tim Burton and a lot more.  We also got to see the previews for the new Tinkerbell movie where she discovers she has a sister and why their wings are unique.

BlogHer is an amazing show where I made a ton of relevant connections for my clients.  At the same time I heard a ton of bad marketing advice being given.  Some people were told to build a link farm off of keywords to their friends sites in a circle off of keywords on their blog rolls.  Others were told to no follow all outbound links across their site or 1.  Google would penalize them and 2.  Adsense would kick them out.  Basically, whomever was trying to teach SEO needs to come to Pubcon and really learn their stuff before they attempt to try it again.  Here are a couple of posts that people from BlogHer wanted me to share:

Title Tags and how to use them

Building a Media kit to get new advertisers

Tips on how to start and maintain a product blog or coupon blog

The difference between reviews and giveaways and how you can make money with them

BlogHer was an amazing conference and one that I will definitely be going back to again.  I highly recommend it as well if you do media buys, are a PR company or and SEO firm.  These ladies know how to build an audience, have a party and put on an amazing show.  It was a great time and unfortunately when I finally catch up from it it will be time for a show that I absolutely love and have not missed in over 5 or 6 years, Affiliate Summit.

Affiliate Summit is one of my favorite shows to go to.  Here are a few of the guides I have written for it as well as some of the sessions I think are worth going to.  I am going to be busy at two booths and I am speaking on Sunday so there are a lot of time slots, etc… I haven’t seen.  If your session isn’t on here, I apologize that I missed it.  These are during times I have free to come see.

Marketing Shows to Attend 2012 – ASE12, Pubcon, SMX & More

I just started booking my travel for a bunch of conferences that I’m either speaking at or might go to to learn at and realized how many ones there are that could be good, as well as ones that are probably not worth your time.  One thing to remember is that there are no good free conferences, at least from my experience.  There are cheap ways to attend the expensive ones like an expo hall pass if you want to see the exhibits and network with people, but if the session passes are free, it is probably a scam to sell you something.

The qualities I look for in a show are:

  • The speakers have to sign a no pitch contract – This is important because you want to learn.  If the person is just pitching their companies and services, you’ll fake learn something basic, listen to a ton of fluff that sounds good, but not get anything of value out of the show.  If the speakers do pitch themselves, and the show doesn’t ban them from speaking, it is not worth going to.
  • They have an evaluation form after each session – These forms help to determine the quality of the sessions and how much people learned.  If you see sessions with awesome reviews coming back and ones that were bad being banned, you will know that the owners care about the show and continue to bring in better quality speakers and sessions.
  • The speakers are at all levels in a company – At many shows you’ll see owners on stage giving a bunch of fluff.  Although they can be great motivational speakers and talk about their own business and how they grew it, they aren’t normally doing the work today (Affiliates are an exception).  I always like to hear from people who do the work, know what is going on and who are the actual experts behind the owner who was marketing online 10 years ago when SEO was changing your meta tags and being part of a webring.
  • Avoid anything with Guru, Guarantees, etc… – Avoid any show that uses the Term Guru, Guarantees you success and that you will 100% make money.  Many of these turn into pitches and they’ll teach you a few basic things,  then they try to sell you their books and dvds on how to make money.  Every one that I have ever seen and gone to out of curiosity has been a scam and not worth a penny.  Although they are amazing at getting your attention and interest, they are not worth it in my opinion.  The minute a book or dvd is pulled out, run for the door.
  • Reviews – I go out to a ton of personal  blogs and foreign blogs and read what people say about these shows.  Find sites that you trust and from sources you trust and see what they think of the show.  If legit Marketers are saying good things about it, then it may be one you want to look at.
  • Attendee lists and Exhibitor Lists – Make sure the show never sells your information to anyone.  That is a huge way to tell if its a scam.  You also want to make sure that they don’t send you spam emails or emails to buy things like their books and dvds ahead of time or after.  You’ll also want to look over the attendees to see if they are in your niche, are similar to you as well as who is exhibiting so that you’ll know what to expect and who to plan on visiting during the show.  This can also help you to determine if it’s a scam or even relevant for your company.

Those are only a few of the things I use to evaluate which marketing shows to attend, speak at, etc…  So now that I went over a few of them, here is where you can find me or a show that you probably will want to attend if you want to learn and be able to network with some awesome people.

Affiliate Summit East 2012 – August 12 – 14 in NYC – Hashtag #ASE12 – Affiliate Summit is an awesome show to pick up new clients for a variety of marketing services, recruit Affiliates and learn about different networks.  The sessions are carefully selected and Shawn and Missy do an amazing job with getting rid of the garbage.  Although I don’t agree with all of the topics like some of the sessions about using adware and how you can make money with it, they also have a ton of other sessions to show how to find it, remove it and recruit value adding Affiliates instead.  There is something for everyone at Affiliate Summit from Affiliates to SEOs, Social Media Marketers and even Email Marketers.  I highly recommend this one and I will be speaking at it on Sunday the 12th from 3:30 to 4:30 I think.  What’s awesome about this show in particular is that you can find people like Rae Hoffman-Dolan, Missy Ward, Shawn Collins, Tricia Meyer, Eric Nagel, Kim Rowley and many more in one place and at one time.  You’re mind will be destroyed with information overload which is why you must attend Affiliate Summit East 2012.

Pubcon West 2012 – October 15 – 18 – hashtag #pubcon – Pubcon is one that I fell in love with instantly.  In fact I’ve flown all over the country from Austin to Vegas and even Hawaii to attend and speak.  The quality is amazing and you will learn a ton of information about SEO and Social Media with a focus on all levels and types of uses.  Pubcon also added an Affiliate track to their show.  One of the biggest benefits I’ve found from attending Pubcon is that the webmasters there are content sites and make excellent partners as Affiliates, for backlinks or even just to network with.  The amount of info and ideas I get from hearing the speakers on SEO and Social Media has been absolutely amazing and I have been able to grow my business by figuring out what was good and bad info and how to use it for my sites.  I highly recommend you go to this show.  Some of the people I’ve met and learned from include Rob Snell, Matt Cutts, Michael Gray, Kenny Hyder, Brett Tabke, Jabez Labret, Roger Monti and many more.

SMX Advanced – June 5 – 12 in Seattle – hashtag #smx – Search Marketing Expo is not a show that I have been to, but I know some of the speakers who speak there and read some of the live blogs or reviews that come out of it.  The information at this show sounds awesome and the speakers that I know who are there really give you their honest advice and tips.  The quality sounds very good and this is a show that I always want to attend but also have something else planned during it.  If you can make it in a couple weeks, do it and then come back here and let me know how it was.

These three shows will end the year for me with Marketing shows that I would attend.  Every once in a while I almost go to some of the Network events or some of the older shows for Search, but I don’t really feel the need to have to be there as I learn a lot more and get a larger variety of topics and contacts from the shows above.  They also seem to be basic and continuously pitch their sales and themselves during sessions so it turns into a sales pitch and the speakers seem to be getting worse and worse.  If you want a few shows to go to, the ones above are my recommendations.

Come See Me Speak at Affiliate Summit 2011 East

Affiliate Summit East 2011
Affiliate Summit East 2011

Hi Everyone.  I hate self promoting posts but I also love getting to meet my readers.  That’s why I wanted to invite you all to come see me speak at Affiliate Summit which is taking place this month from the 21st to the 23rd of August.  If you haven’t registered yet, you can still attend and you can also save 5% off any registration type by using code ASE11FIVE.  You can also click the banner to the left to use my Affiliate link if you want ;-).

Anyways, my session is on Sunday from 11:00 am to Noon Session 1d in the Sutton (South & Regent) room.  The session is for attendees of all levels with Gold, Platinum and Diamond pass holders.  The topic we will be covering is if your Affiliate Program is actually adding value to your company and building it instead of coasting along side or actually doing damage.

We’re going to cover everything from how Affiliate marketing can enhance and hurt your PPC, how it can help your SEO but also debunk a few myths about Affiliate Marketing and SEO as well as go over things like the good and the bad about trademark bidding, coupons, loyalty sites and everything in between.  I’d also like to give a big thank you to Kellie Stevens from Affiliate Fair Play for shooting a few custom brand new adware videos for the presentation and the show.

There are a ton of other great sessions that will be at the show and here are a few that you will find me at and possibly live blogging:

Sunday

How to pitch your company from 10am to 11 (Just before my session) with Tricia Meyers, Robert Adler, Kim Rowley and AdHustler.  These are some amazing people with lots to say and even more to teach.  You can definitely use this information to make the most out of your pitches at Affiliate Summit.

Meet market.  This isn’t really a session but it is the most intense networking session you will see, besides the parties.  Go in, talk to everyone and get your business cards ready.

SEO Clinic from 2 to 3.  This session with @Sugarrae, @Greywolf and @Kenhyder is always a fun one to watch.  Submit your sites and get some great and creative feedback from three creative people.

Monday

Eric Nagel’s white boarding session.  This guy is seriously smart and worth listening to.  I don’t really need to say more.  If you’re up at 8am, this is a must attend.

SEO – Ask the experts with Rhea Drysdale, Bruce Clay, Michael Strekko and Stephan Spencer should be a good one.  I haven’t heard two of them speak before but it should definitely be a good question and answer session from 11:30 to 12:30. (I’ll probably actually be at the testimonials in social media session.)

Affiliate Improv starring Jen Goode, Daniel M Clark, Drew Bennet, Michael Buchele and Wade Tonkin.  Just go to this…no need to wonder why.  It’s from 2 to 3 and you will love it.

Ask the Experts Roundtable.  I always love to hear Melanie Seery speak and she has a round table.  It will be a great opportunity to speak to a smart industry veteran.

Tuesday

If you’re up in the morning, go visit Eric Nagel again at 8am for another white boarding session.

Social Media in Niche Markets.  Between Lisa, Joe and Steph you will walk away with a headache of knowledge about using social media to break into niches.  This session is from 11:30 to 12:30.

At this point if you have any energy left, try walking the exhibit hall and then make the rest of your appointments.

Affiliate Summit is above and beyond one of my favorite shows to go to.  I hope to see you all there and if you would like to meet me while I am there, leave a comment here.  All comments are moderated so your info won’t go live unless you say to post it.  Thank you for reading and looking forward to meeting you or seeing you again.  I also have three or four new Affiliate programs to announce at the show so definitely come find me.  See you all in NYC!

Come see me speak at PubCon South.

I can’t believe PubCon South is only a few weeks away.  (There are still Pubcon South tickets available if you want to come).  Last October was my first PubCon and it quickly became one of my favorite shows ever.  Not only did I love getting to speak there, but I am completely excited to get to go to PubCon west 2011 in Las Vegas this year again.   However, before the Vegas show there is PubCon South in Austin Texas.

As you know, PubCon is the leading show for Search Engine and Social Media Marketing.  They have also added on additional tracks like Affiliate Marketing and Live Site Review Sessions.  The nice thing about PubCon is that just like Affiliate Summit, the speakers are there to share knowledge and not to pitch their own companies and services.  Both shows are incredible for learning and what’s nice is that they are spaced out far enough apart that you can do all four Affiliate Summits and Pubcons without burning out.   Anyways, I am completely excited for PubCon South and am speaking on two panels.

How to Start an Affiliate Program.

My first panel is on How to Start an Affiliate Program and is a great session for new Merchants as well as established Merchants that want to learn about things they can do better with their own programs.  We’ll be talking about everything from terms and conditions to Adware and Parasites as well as the types of Affiliates and which networks might be right for you.  This is a great session to attend if you have question for the panel members as well.  This will be my fourth time in the last year speaking on this topic and it always ends up being one of my favorite ones to go over.

Site Review – Focus on Affiliates.

My second panel is moderated by one of the most qualified and well known people in the Affiliate industry, Shawn Collins.   This will probably be my favorite panel to speak on at the show.  Everyone is encouraged to submit their sites ahead of time or during the session and we will give them a live overview and review.  We will go over things that we think they could do better, give advice on everything from SEO to conversion rates, monetizing their sites, any errors that we notice and anything else that can cross our minds.  I am very excited for this panel as this is one of my favorite things to do.

During the rest of the show when I am not speaking, I’ll be live blogging the sessions that I attend as well as helping to recruit some new publishers for the Jobfox Affiliate Program exclusively on Share a Sale.   As you know from the post, Jobfox is one of the fastest growing job sites online and our program pays out a $3 lead and 25% commission on resume sales.   It is a definite winner!

If you are coming to PubCon South 2011 and want to meet up, either leave a comment here, email adamr (at) adamriemer (dot) me or come to my sessions and come talk to me after.   If you are not able to make it to PubCon South 2011 but want to know what is going on in the sessions, come back and read my blog.  I’ll be live blogging the show and hitting the submit button every ten or 15 minutes during the sessions so you’ll get an almost real time seat at the show.  See you all there!

Here are some of the things we went over in NYC and we can cover here as well.

  • Coupon and Cash Back Sites (The benefits and the risks)
  • Newsletters
  • CPA vs. Affiliate Networks
  • Terms and Conditions and how to change them
  • How to be competitive against large brands

Hope to see you all there.

Adam
